CHARACTER NAME: Yuno Gasai
SERIES: Mirai Nikki
CANON POINT: Chapter 54 (manga-wise)
APPEARANCE: here.

PERSONALITY: ( please note there are huge spoilers for the series and the ending of it in this application! )

There are many sides - or more accurately, layers - to the girl known as Yuno Gasai. On first sight she seems like the kind of girl that might be liked by a lot of people. Good grades at school, seemingly pretty smart, good-looking, not terribly rude even though she doesn't seem to socialize deeply a lot with other people either (it more seems to remain on some superficial level) - and yes, she actually is pretty popular among the people in her school. As Yukiteru states in the first chapter: 'Yuno Gasai... Good grades and beautiful, our school's very own idol'. She's the model student and an object of many guys' affections with sometimes even a cute smile at ready, but Yuno never seems to return any of them.

But even though that's what people who don't really get to know her might see, it's definitely not everything about Yuno. Even though that's the kind of appearance she shows others at school, Yuno is actually much more of a broken person on many levels. So unless anything about Yukiteru is involved (this will be further described below) she would most likely just interact with people on this level of appearance, just socializing superficially with other people but never actually letting them in.

Then who is Yuno Gasai really? A girl who started to become fully broken due to three particular events which will be described here and then elaborated further on how they influenced her personality - the first is her parents' treatment of her, secondly her involvement with Yukiteru and thirdly the fact that is revealed to us near the end of the series, the fact that she's actually the Yuno of another world.

But it all started with the relationship between Yuno and her parents. Her parents - technically her adopted parents - practically wanted Yuno to be perfect in every way, especially where school work was concerned. And she did try hard for them, since she wanted to please her newly found parents after she was adopted. They were so demanding and pressuring that at a certain point they went as far as locking Yuno up in a cage in a room and only letting her eat and sleep there at certain appointed times. No matter how much Yuno begged them, they wouldn't let her out of the cage until they decided it was time and after a while it just became the first thing that broke Yuno. She decided that her parents might be able to understand her pain and sorrow about being locked up in there if they were locked up in there for a time as well without being allowed to get out of there - just like the way they always treated her. She thought that her parents then might understand and start to treat her more lovingly, but even when she locked them up in there they only yelled at her and called her a monster, the complete opposite of what Yuno wanted and expected. So she didn't let them out, hoping that the shouting might change after all, but in the end both her mother and father died of hunger, forcing Yuno to cover up their deaths. This was the first event which made Yuno a little more unstable than other people.

But the second event was what gave this unstability a focus, namely the boy known as Yukiteru Amano. Yuno was hopeless and helpless after her parents' death which she was involved with, but he was that which gave her a future - she promised to become his bride in the future, so now she had something to live for, to go on for, a goal to head to. Yukiteru practically became Yuno's emotional support without knowing it, the only thing that kept her stable after her parents' death. From that moment on she becomes completely obsessed with Yukiteru. He's the only thing that matters to her, and she loves him more than anything. It's no exaggeration to say she would do anything at all for him, including murdering large amounts and groups of people just to protect him (and this is exactly what she does during the game with the Diaries). She stalks him even before the whole thing with the Diaries happens and she only continues to do it afterwards. Her own Diary is the biggest example of that, it's the Yukiteru Diary which tells every little thing that Yukiteru does or that happens to him. The Diaries are based on things the people would have them would write before they had the Diaries too, so even before that Yuno already stalked him enough to find out practically everything he did. When it comes down to things that could take Yukiteru away from her Yuno switches from her usual state to a completely ruthless state. She doesn't hesitate to lie, steal, kill - name it and she'd do it - to keep Yukiteru for herself, and sometimes she even seems oddly cheerful in the process of doing so. When he seems to make other friends she writes the word 'die' over and over in the sand, and eventually she even manages to turn him against his own friends. She's obsessive and possessive of Yukiteru up to a level where she's practically both the epitome and textbook example of a yandere. Yukiteru calls her a crazy stalker more than once during the series and it's pretty much the best description.

But the final thing that broke her just that little bit extra was what happened at the end of the first game with the Diaries. When it was just the two of them left it meant one of them had to kill the other (due to them being the last two participants) but neither of them wanted to, so they decided on a double lovers' suicide instead. But Yuno didn't actually swallow the pills that would kill them, since she thought that if she won the game and could become God she could just revive him. And so she did - due to Yukiteru being dead she became God and revived him.. only to find out she could revive his body, but not his soul, rendering the whole idea useless. She had failed, and now she was stuck without the object of her obsession for all eternity - until she was offered an opportunity to go to an earlier point in time in another timeline (the second timeline). She killed the Yuno of her own timeline and took her place, showing that she's even willing to go as far as killing herself (another version of her) to be with Yukiteru.

But it seems that she's not able to stay with Yukiteru and become happy no matter the world. By the end of the second timeline when they are the only ones left again Yukiteru tells her that Akise showed him a message which told Yukiteru that Yuno was the Yuno of another timeline - he revealed her secret, so she immediately goes on to try and kill this Yukiteru so she can go on to a third timeline to try again with that Yukiteru. By this point she's gone mad enough to think that even killing this Yukiteru is okay to go to another world with another Yukiteru (although she is shown to be upset at this actually - 'I just wanted to spend today happily with you..!' with tears in her eyes as she swings her axe). Even though she pretends to be completely cold in ruthless in everything she does, there's actually more below it. Yuno is just a girl who managed to become completely broken due to a certain run of events, and she - just like everyone else - just wants to be happy, of course. Even if, when confronted by Yukiteru, she shows him a cold face and tells him "So what does it matter to you if I become God or not? Why not let me go ahead and repeat this game again with a 3rd you." At another point Yuno says that they were only using each other, trying to make their relationship seem less real or important so she can close off her heart from it better to try to not get hurt, talking about how she could have done the same for anyone at all as long as they would have given her a purpose, it wouldn't even have to be Yukiteru. But she actually doesn't want things to be this way deep down, she just wants to be able to become happy with him, but feels like neither the first nor second timeline allowed her to. ("I'm crazy?! What's crazy is this world that refuses to let me be with you!") Even if she pretends to not care about the fact that this Yukiteru will die, her Diary shows her real feelings, talking about how she wants to go save Yukiteru, how she has to help him, and when it turns out he's still alive after all and talking about how he'll save her the Diary tells her what she really feels deep down - "Yukki came for me! I'm so happy!" She does love him, even with her talk about how she could have loved anyone, not just as emotional support but just as a person too.

All in all, Yuno Gasai is just a very complicated, layered and conflicted person. Most people will only get to see the side of her that treats people somewhat politely, but mostly of all distantly and superficially or the side of her that gets extremely aggressive and violent when Yukiteru or his safety is involved. But below all the crazy stalking tendencies and overly violent urges is a girl who tries to make her heart cold but actually just wants to become happy with the person she loves more than anything, and is deep down - in some ways - just an actual normal girl who blushes at bold proclamations from the boy she loves. That being said, Yuno can't necessarily be called a good person though, rather a really broken person.

ABILITIES: Yuno does not have any supernatural abilities - after all, she is just a fourteen year old human girl. But she still is frighteningly good at fighting and killing for a fourteen year old girl. She's shown to take on entire groups of people at once and is good at improvising with weapons - she's shown using guns, axes, knives and pretty much any random nearby sharp or blunt object as a weapon if the situation calls for it. She's pretty good at keeping her own in a fight, even if the opponent is much bigger or older than her, and doesn't seem to hesitate in killing her opponent either.

Back home the only remotely supernatural object she had was her Future Diary. These are capable of predicting the future, and they take on a different form and exact function for every single person who has them. Yuno's was her cellphone, and her Future Diary was able to predict the future of one specific person - Yukiteru Amano, the guy she obsesses over. It constantly tells her whatever Yukiteru is doing even when they are far apart and can even predict what's about to happen to them. Yuno actually had two of these Diaries, since she took the second world Yuno's as well (hence why one of them calls him 'Yukki', her nickname for him, and the other Diary says 'Amano-kun', the way the second world's Yuno calls him (since she never got to be as close to him as the this Yuno did).

POSSESSIONS: Her own cellphone (of which the Future Diary abilities don't work anymore, obviously), the second world Yuno's cellphone (see the previous one), the clothes she's wearing.

>PERSONA
MAJOR ARCANA:
→ The Tower
→ Death
→ The Lovers

SHADOW: Her Shadow would differ greatly depending on how the conflicts get resolved in-game and her relationship with Yukiteru, but I will give a description here of what it would be like if she would immediately meet her Shadow when going in without in-game interactions.

Her Shadow would be that side of her which she is surpressing while pretending to be all cold and ruthless about moving on to the next world to be with the third Yukiteru, the side of her which actually just wants to be with Yukiteru no matter what, who was actually happy that Yukiteru came back for her even though she was trying to kill him. Needless to say her dungeon would show off her obsession over Yukiteru in an over-the-top way for everyone to see - there would be big screens displaying messages from her Diary about Yukiteru (mainly the sentence "Yukki came for me! I'm so happy!" would be repeated) and there would be pictures of them together everywhere, including the fake wedding picture they took. In a way, it would focus on Yuno's more innocent side of the obsession instead of the cold or creepy side of it. Sure, there's still an amount of creepiness in it over how obsessive and over-the-top it is, but most of it would be about how happy she is to be with him, how much she loves him, how she just wants to stay with him and marry and live a happy life together (hence the wedding pictures) etc.

The Shadow, in that sense, would actually show more her despair over all of it, talking about how she just wants to be happy with Yukiteru instead of repeating this world over and over just to be able to be by his side. She doesn't want him to die, she doesn't want to kill him, she just wants to have her happy ever after with him. She was scared and lonely and then Yukiteru gave her a purpose, the person she loves more than anything. Thus with all of this she's practically forcing Yuno to stop trying to deny this part of her just so she pretends she doesn't have to feel pain about having to repeat it over and over again, to openly admit she just wants to be with Yukiteru.

PERSONA: I would like for Yuno's Persona to be the mythological figure Hera, Zeus' wife and the goddess of women and marriage. Hera was known for her jealous and vengeful nature, most notably against Zeus's lovers and offspring, but also against mortals who crossed her.

Her appearance would mainly resemble the somewhat classical Greek view of the goddess (as seen here, for example). She would be sitting though on a somewhat round or even orb-like throne, much like the one canonically used by Deux Ex Machina to reflect the fact that she was able to become God before in the game. (And therefore matching with Yukiteru's Persona Zeus.) Rather than having an actual face, Hera would have a cellphone screen where her face is supposed to be which only shows static.

11:45 AM: Yukki jumped so high on the high jump during gym class..! It almost seemed like he was shining in the sun when he went up, none of the other guys were as cool as Yukki!

3:13 PM: Yukki was talking to a student with an afro-like haircut during lunch. Who is that, Yukki..? How do you know him?

3:15 PM: Yukki was only given a riddle by the student with the afro hair. It seems like they're not friends. Safe!

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

The tapping of a pen against a desk continued idly as Yuno explained some of the math problems they had to do as homework to three girls who had gathered around her desk, since she would obviously know the answer with her kind of grades, right? And so Yuno was explaining it to them in a reasonably calm and polite matter, but that wasn't what she was really focused on. Even though she was talking to them, she kept tapping the desk with the pen instead as her gaze drifted off after every sentence, to a boy sitting in the back of class. Yukiteru Amano. Why did the seating arrangements have to be so messed up that they sat so far from each other even in class like this? Who cared about those girls sitting next to her who all said they admired her, who called her smart when she answered their questions about the homework? What did they matter?

The girl left after getting their answers, giggling with each other, but Yuno just shook her head when the girls asked if she wanted to go to Junes with them after school, just idly telling them she had something else to do, her gaze still aimed at the boy.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Why was he talking to that other girl? Who was she, either way? Yuno recalled seeing her face in class more often, but she didn't always bother to remember the names of her classmates, the names weren't important. Everything that was important right now was that there was this girl talking to Yukki, her Yukki, who does she even think she is? Yuno tried to perk her ears to listen to what they were talking about, but it was useless with this distance between them and the other people in the classroom all giggling and happily making plans for what to do this afternoon. Would she really have to get closer to figure out?

Tap. Tap.

Six minutes and thirty-four seconds. That was how long it exactly had been since Yukiteru and the unknown girl started talking about who knows what. That was much too long, wasn't it? What kind of casual topic or small question would warrant such a long talk? Her expression dropped momentarily as she frowned - it wasn't like either of the two she was looking at were looking at her right now, either way.

That's right, Yukki was only looking at another girl who wasn't her--

Tap.

With a final tap of her pen she instead discarded it thoughtlessly on her desk, leaving her chair to walk right up to Yukiteru and the girl as if she wasn't interrupting a conversation at all.

"Yukki!" With a smile she planted both her hands on his desk, leaning on it and completely ignoring the other girl who was still standing there - what did she matter, trying to talk to Yukki like that.. "Let's go out together today, okay?"
